Arina - Character Concept by The-Ez Arina - Character Concept by The-Ez
Arina Flackwood is the granddaughter of the great and fearsome pirate, Captain Spartacus. Together with his crew and a spellcaster named Chester Gangfield, Captain Spartacus sailed the Atlantic Ocean in search of the legendary Book of the Hounds—the key to eternal youth.

Spartacus failed to find the Book and eventually retired from pirating, changing his name to Flackwood and even starting a family.

Since before she could speak, Arina was raised on a heavy diet of her grandfather's stories about the open sea and his adventures with the spellcaster. In fact, Chester Gangfield and his talking rat companion became icons in the Flackwood household—although, having never met them, Arina suspected they were just fictional characters invented by her grandfather.

After her grandfather died, Arina took over his (somewhat) legitimate goods transporting business, but always dreamed of having her own adventures on a pirate ship.

One fateful day, with a carpenter and a teenage boy in tow, Chester Gangfield—the spellcaster himself—knocks on Arina's door and asks for a cheap ship ride to Africa. Arina immediately packs her things and joins the guys on their quest to find Chester's old spell book.

The search for the Book of the Hounds continues.

Hey, guys! :wave: Sorry this is a little convoluted. ^^; Just felt like writing something. :giggle:

Been mulling over this character's visual design for a long while now. I ended up jacking an old ocean goddess design I did, made her a teenager and popped her into pants. :D Ah, voila! New character! :la: Okay, there was a little more to it, but ya knooowww. ^^;

Not much more to say. Hope you guys like her! :meow: Thanks for looking! :heart:

More Arina:

My friend ~sketchbird15 did a sketch of Arina! Check it out! :la:

Okay, so she's in the Valiard Mansion story? Not a separate story, right?

YEP! She's 100% Valiard! :D I need a female character to ease up the sausage fest that will ensue with Gangfield and the gang. :giggle:

Great work! Even without any of the back story (which is pretty interesting, I might add) she makes a great first impression. I love her design (ooh! open sleeves, puffy pants and shiny things! :meow:), and your expressions are awesome as always. :D Not to mention that hair! I adore the hair. But I see countless people already told you that. :)

I only see one small thing to crit about, by the way, and that is the arm that rests on Arina's hip. I whipped up a pic to illustrate what I mean. (literally ;P) While the lower arm obviously points away from the torso, a bit to the front from the viewer's perspective, the upper arm seems to just comfortably hang down, a bit to the back even. (I tried to indicate this with arrows) If you crop the bottom off until the elbow the arm seems to suggest a very different angle to me. (Bottom left image is an example of what the upper arm seems to suggest in my eyes, bottom right is what the lower arm would suggest the rest of the arm looks like.) Tracing your image to help illustrate what I mean I noticed it's not so much a problem with the line art, but I think more with the shading.

And while I am picking nits (yeah, I just found a second little detail to crit about), the perspective of the ship in the background does not really match Arina's. For Arina the camera seems to be low, looking up; while for the ship the camera seems to be pretty high looking down on the railing. Unless I am wrong in assuming that surface of the railing is supposed to be horizontal, and instead it looks more like this. Which would be kinda cool.

...I guess that quick doodle counts as the first ever Arina fan art? :dummy:

Anyway, I hope my rambling about perspective and slightly overreacting over that tiny bit of the shading was helpful. :P And I look forward to seeing more of this character, she's really cool. :D Count me a fan!
